Accident claims life of De Queen man, son

Just after 10 p.m. Friday, Little River County officials received a 9-1-1 call reporting a two-vehicle accident on U.S. Hwy. 71 south of Wilton near the Weldon Garrison residence.

First responders from Wilton and Ashdown, along with deputies from the Little River County Sheriff’s Office, officers from the Ashdown Police Department and an officer from the Arkansas State Police responded.

According to a report from the Arkansas State Police, a 1998 GMC truck was traveling south on U.S. Hwy. 71. The truck crossed the center line and collided head on with a 2011 Ford Focus driven by 34-year-old Jesus Fraire Rubio of De Queen, Ark.

Rubio was pronounced dead at the scene by Little River County Coroner Roddy Smith. Seven others were injured and transported to area hospitals.

On Saturday, Rubio’s 3-year-old son died from injuries sustained in the accident at a Texarkana, Texas, hospital.

Road conditions were wet at the time of the accident.
