Panthers fall to Badgers

The Ashdown Panthers gave the defending Class AAAA State Champion Arkadelphia Badgers all they could handle Friday in a 7AAAA Conference match-up at Dick Hays Stadium. Unfortunately, a big second half for the Badgers was too much for the Panthers to overcome in a 44-12 loss.

Arkadelphia scored two touchdowns in the first quarter to lead 14-0 entering the second.

Ashdown scored its first touchdown with 7:55 to play in the second quarter as Bradley Bearden hooked up with Mark Covington on a 54-yard pass play for the score. The extra point was no good making the score 14-6 in favor of the Badgers.

The Panthers cut deeper into the Arkadelphia lead on their next possession as Ben Birtcher scored on a 53-yard run with 4:42 to play in the second quarter. The 2-point conversion attempt was no successful and Ashdown trailed 14-12.

Arkadelphia kicked two field goals in the final 2:43 of the second quarter to take a 20-12 lead in at halftime.

In the second half, the Badgers kicked another field goal and scored three touchdowns. to pull away from the Panthers and secure the win.

Ashdown travels to central Arkansas this week to take on the Joe T. Robinson Senators.

Robinson, the defending 7AAAA Conference champions, are coming off a 41-35 loss to the Bauxite Miners.

Senator senior Mekel Kentel ran 16 times for 147 yards and four TDs at Bauxite.

Kickoff for Friday’s game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Charlie George Stadium in Little Rock.
